GATEKEEPERS

This series of photographs is on permanent exhibition at the Fort Point National Historic Site in San Francisco. It was commissioned in 2012 and this was the statement for the original exhibition.

Thousands of commuters cross the Golden Gate Bridge every day on their way to work. But for the people in these photographs taken by Andy Freeberg, the bridge itself is a workplace. Freeberg captured the bridge’s human side with individual portraits of engineers, painters, toll takers, and others responsible for the daily care and safety of the bridge. These pictures were commissioned by the For-Site Foundation in 2012 for an art exhibition titled International Orange, which was in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge. This installation was specifically commissioned for these two rooms to honor the unsung heroes who keep the great structure above us safe and maintained.
